ItemPoder/saber e subjetividade na construção do sentido do teletrabalho(2003) Costa, Isabel de Sá Affonso daThis thesis aims at fostering understanding of telework from the power/knowledge theoretical perspective. In this sense, telework is understood as a discourse that at one and the same time subjugates and builds subjectivities. To reach its objective, the author explores how teleworkers make sense out of their experience through the analysis of their discursive practices. Twenty-five teleworkers residing in Rio de Janeiro city were interviewed. All of the interviewees are teleworkers who hold stead job positions and perform knowledge- intensive tasks. ItemTransformação tecnológica e estratégia competitiva: um estudo multicaso(2003) Martins Filho, Edison de OliveiraThe main objective ofthis research is to investigate how technology innovation helps to implement strategy and to obtain sustainable competitive advantage in a globalization context. After a comprehensive literature review, covering competitiveness, technology, strategy and strategic alliances, the technology innovation phenomenon was explored in four different industrial sectors: Paper and Pulp, Siderurgy, Pharmaceuticals and Medicai Applieations of Nuclear Energy. The concept of competitiveness and the Brazilian industrial structure are analised through the lemo of the schumpeterian, the industrial organization and the chamberlanian models. Evaluation ofthe companies core competencies and their strategic arquitectures are made as well. In addiction the relationship bctween competitive advantage and technological innovation is studied. A description ofthe existing schools of strategic thought are made. The relationships between strategic alliances and technology transfer are also described. The competitive and structural characteristics of the selected industrial sectors are analised. The profile of each company is also described, using data obtained through semistructured interviews. The results are individually analised and then consolidated in chapter fouT. The research results obtained information about the insertion of the technological variable into strategic anagement. It was seen that strategic management considers technology in three leveIs. The first leveI is analysis; the second is strategic decision and the third is strategic implementation. Finally, it is suggested that the industrial structure model proposed by Porter may bc refined to incorporate cooperative strategies used by companies through a so called cooperative strategy indicator. ItemNegociação e implementação de acordos de poluição transfronteiriça: o caso Brasil-Uruguai em relação à Termelétrica de Candiota (RS)(2003) Rótulo Decuadra, Daniel EnriqueResearch studies about international environmental negotiations between States in Latin America are not common. This thesis is about the process of negotiation and implementation of bilateral agreements between Brazil and Uruguay on the risk of transboundary air pollution risk produced by the coal-powered thermoelectrical facility Presidente Médici (UTPM)- at Candiota region. This process is analyzed from 1988 until 2002. First, this thesis explains why this negotiation was possible. Some different factors explain it: a good historical relationship and trust between these two countries; Brazilian environmental agencies interests to improve monitoring UTPM emissions; lack of better alternatives to a non agreement for the two constituencies: Brazil and Uruguay and contextual factors, like Southern Cone Common Market (Mercosul) and changes in environmental policy in Brazil also explain common interests in joint problem resolving. Both States obtained mutual gains outcomes from the agreement by developing 'joint-fact- finding' research and monitoring. This monitoring did not show that acid rain was coming to Uruguai from Brazil. Second, this thesis shows that institutional agreement weakness was not an implementation impediment. On the contrary, it allows Brazilian authorities to cooperate with Uruguayans developing acid rain monitoring in Candiota region and both improving their technology of air monitoring. Third, this research shows that the implementation process (1991-2002) produced some different results and impacts: it helped to develop environmental agencies institutional capacity both in Brazil and Uruguay; it made possible some changes at the power of environmental agencies to control UTPM; implementation impacts also pushed UTPM 'enforcement'. Environmental agencies put UTPM under pressure, and different kind of measures to improve environmental performance were took by the firm. Finally, this thesis shows that implementation process was not finished because political interest´s about Candiota pollution declined at the public agenda in both countries: Brazil and Uruguay. Discussion on the problem became only scientific ItemA produção de subjetividades em organizações contemporâneas: práticas discursivas e políticas da empregabilidade(2003) Rohm, RicardoThe research aimed at analysing the political and discursive practices of the metanarrative of employability in the contemporary organizational field, heading for the understanding of the social and micropolitical devices which happen to produce some especific kinds of subjectivities within organizations. From a post-modern epistemological perspective (Weltanshauung), the research focused on the issues concerning the production of subjectivities in the existing organizational society beyond the traditional theoretical standpoints whose common assumptions are due to the modernist approaches of organizational analysis. A deconstructive theoretical approach was emphasized across the whole text and it was mainly inspired and intellectually based upon Michel Foucault's genealogical démarche. His original conceptualization of power-knowledge relations informed the development of a methodology so as to analyse the discursive practices which determine many of the human resources policies concerning employability. The main thesis presented employability as a grand-device of micropolitical control towards the production of subjectivities whose main operation technologies are: an economic modernizing rhetoric, a moralistic dietetics and an instrumental education. Several discursive fragments from different academicists, journalists and some authors from the managerial litterature were taken into account so as to carefully deconstruct their speeches. This analysis revealed the mechanisms of production of pasteurized, mercantile and erratic subjectivities. Some inquietudes of heuristic nature are featured in the domain of organizational, psychological, sociological and political perspectives heading for new studies. ItemResponsabilidade corporativa: entre o social e o regulado estudo de um setor da siderurgia brasileira(2004) Lopez Parra, Marcelo FernandoThe main objective of this thesis was analyzing the regulated and social dimensions of social responsibility. The conceptual framework was explored, making comparisons between the theoretical and practical sides of corporative social responsibility. In a research developed in steel sector, specificalIy in Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional, CSN and Companhia Siderúrgica Paulista, COSIP A, the discourses could be evaluated and the main results points out to the folIowing: the social actions are alI regulated by law. Therefore, it is possible understanding this movement and discourse beyond the visible face. We question here if these actions named Social Responsible are, in fact, contributing for a social and economic development, and if they are sustainable in long termo Data analysis was made by discourse analysis as a way for understanding the non-visible discourse and the relations between the context and content of discourse. AdditionalIy, it was made documental and bibliographic research. ItemEstudo da validade de generalização das práticas de governança corporativa ao ambiente dos fundos de pensão: uma análise segundo as teorias da agência e institucional(2004) Fontes Filho, Joaquim RubensThe research aimed at analysing the political and discursive practices of the metanarrative of employability in the contemporary organizational field, heading for the understanding of the social and micropolitical devices which happen to produce some especific kinds of subjectivities within organizations. From a post-modern epistemological perspective (Weltanshauung), the research focused on the issues concerning the production of subjectivities in the existing organizational society beyond the traditional theoretical standpoints whose common assumptions are due to the modernist approaches of organizational analysis. ItemAção social das empresas privadas: uma metodologia para avaliação de resultados(2004) Rodrigues, Maria Cecília PratesIn the recent years Corporate Social Action (CSA) has become more and more relevant to corporate context. The aim is to benefit both poor communities and the donnor companies, as it meets the needs of their salient stakeholders. Nevertheless, there still exists considerable scepticism concerning CSA. In order to become a solid management practice, it is critcal to evidence the attained results. Up to now, the focus has been on process evaluation, that is, on the policies companies are adopting. Literature revision has shown a great need of studies related to results identification in this field. Therefore, using stakeholders` framework (according to Wood, 1991; Donaldson and Preston, 1995; Hopkins, 1997; Hamil, 1999), we have developped a methodology to evaluate CSA results, based on public and private effectiveness criteria. As we applied it to assess Xerox social action in Brazil we were able to identify the attainment degree of expected results related to the benefitted community (Mangueira) and also to some Xerox salient stakeholders (employees and clients). ItemDesordem ou vácuo institucional?: uma análise dos discursos presentes na educação superior peruana(2005) Bandeira, Mariana LimaThis thesis is about change, discontinuity, instability. The theoretical perspective used to analyses the changing process was Institutional Theory, which argues that institutions has a long-term time. The institutional change has always be seen as a structural process and a incremental one, but this research aimed rescue the dynamic side of institutional change, understanding that as a result of deinstitutionalization and institutionalization processes. In order to understand the deinstitutionalization and institutionalization processes, we try to understand the concepts of interactive and iterative. So, it was possible understand that these process are interdependent and has to be understood as both side of institutional change. Nevertheless, it couldn¿t have an institutional vacuum, but a hybrid order or plural one, where a set of institutional forces would find its legitimacy. The Discourses Analysis supports this research, which was developed in Peru. A group of University professors was interviewed and we noticed that there are a lot of practices that act as micro institutional rules. In that way, we can admit that there is no vacuum, but a plural institutional order. ItemDiscursos e a construção do 'real': um estudo do processo de formação e institucionalização do campo da biotecnologia(2005) Peci, AlketaComprehension of the processes of formation of new organizational fields is the main objective that stimulated the theoretical reflection and empirical research that I present in this paper. My intention here is to uphold the potential for the application of seemingly dichotomous perspectives in terms of the objectivity/subjectivity dimension in the comprehension of the objective in question. The contribution of Foucault, with his concept of discourse, is linked to the proposal of critical constructivism represented by Latour and studies of science and technology. Juxtaposing these perspectives, I examined the dynamics of the biotechnological field on the basis of the dialectic of movements of demarcation/circularity, which is basically a simultaneous movement of (dis)construction of the boundaries of a field. The dialectic of demarcation/circularity is made up of the set of relations established between heterogeneous elements ¿ institutions, economic and social processes, behavioral patterns, systems of norms, techniques, types of classification, forms of characterization, in other words it finds ways of emerging in the course of discursive formations. This theoretical proposal ¿ which incorporates an overlooked dimension in institutional analysis, especially in organization studies (power) ¿ has the advantage of contributing to enhancing comprehension of the dynamics of institutionalization. By proposing that the institutional processes arise within discursive fields, the argument put forward is that such processes contribute to the productivity of the power relations in these fields. In empirical terms, I conducted a descriptive and exploratory research directed at the biotechnology sector. The research was based on a historical perspective, since the analysis spans the period from the origins of genetic science (beginning of the 20th century) through to recent developments in biotechnology in the USA (beginning of the 21st century). The USA was chosen as the locus of research, principally due to the fact that structuring of the field of biotechnology originated in that country, subsequently spreading to other countries around the world. Starting from this theoretical and methodological framework, three discursive formations are highlighted: organization, information and network. Each of the discursive formations is characterized by a dominant set of discourses that prepare the ground for the appearance and (trans)formation of the focus-objects under analysis. In this process, organizations appear in at least two ways: as boundary-organizations ¿ which are important for understanding the movement of the approximation of different discursive domains ¿ and as new organizations, which accompany the (trans)formation of new fields, whereby prevailing discourses materialize at a given historical moment and contribute to breathe life into new discourses, which in turn spark off new power relations. Among the conclusions of this work, I would highlight the following: questioning the 'organizational' dimension of the fields; the relationship revealed not only between the discourses and the institutionalized practices, but also with the process of construction of legitimacy; and the redefinition of the concept of organizations, based on new conceptions relating to the limits of the topic, the objectivity/subjectivity, and space/time dichotomy. ItemGestão pública como fonte de competitividade nacional: um estudo da evidência latino-americana no século xx(2005) Alves, Paulo Vicente dos SantosThe thesis explores how the public management influenced the competitivity in the countries of Latin America along the XXth century. A historical review of the development in the modern period leads to a model involving six main variables: public management, innovation, transaction costs, military efficiency, productivity and competitivity. A historical and geographical analysis of the Latin America is used as basis to understand how the development unfolded in the region in light of the model. Several analyses, both quantitative and qualitative, are made involving the variables. It¿s concluded that the influence of public management in the region can be explained through the model, and it was done in two great movements, one in the 1930¿s decade and another one in the 1990¿s decade. The analysis reveals that the action of public management was a reaction to external events and it was done in an adaptive manner. It is also concluded that these actions make sense when seen in light of the Game theory, and that public management always tried to stimulate regional development through coopetition. ItemDinâmica de institucionalização de práticas sociais: estudo da responsabilidade social no campo das organizações bancárias(2005) Ventura, Elvira Cruvinel FerreiraThe scope of this theses is to understand the dynamics of the institutionalization of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) within the Field of Banking Organizations in Brazil. Using the social analysis model put forward by Boltanski and Chiapello (1999) and reverting to the conceptual basis of the institutional approach and using Bourdieu¿s notion of interest (1996), we arrive at an analytical model that enabled us to assess CSR as part of a movement of displacement of capitalism. The theory we propose here is that with the institutionalization of CSR, actions are justified in terms of the common good, being legitimized by structural confirmations and arrangements and, at the same time, heeding the inherent interests of the Field. The means used for comprehension of the dynamics of the institutionalization of CSR were: (1) the analysis of the construction of the phenomenon of CSR, which enabled us to identify critical factors and events, leaders in Brazil and associated ratification of the institutionalization of this social practice; (2) the description of the Field of Banking Organizations and the identification of the elements of its CSR in History, which are essential steps for understanding the justifications for insertion of the Field in the movement towards CSR; (3) the identification of key players in the institutionalization of the social practice within the Field, as well as the categorization of practical actions considered socially responsible to be found in the organizations researched, analyzing them in terms of justifications and interests; (4) the analysis of the dissemination and sedimentation of structural arrangements linked to CSR in the organizations of the Field, such as specific areas created to deal with CSR, social reports and organizational websites. The field research assessed some 30 organizations and included documentary analysis and interviews. We noted that, from being a marginal and isolated action, over the course of the past decade CSR has become a structured action in banking organizations, while at the same time becoming transformed into a social value, capable of contributing to the legitimacy of the Field. In this respect, research showed that retail banks are those that are inserted in the movement towards CSR, which ratifies the thesis of the phenomenon as displacement of capitalism. ItemPor uma teorização das organizações de produção artesanal: habilidades produtivas nos caminhos singulares do Rio de Janeiro(2006) Silva, Heliana Marinho daThe purpose of this thesis is to support the argument that workmanship production centers don¿t represent just survival strategy of social groups marginal to economical structure. Workmanship organizations are productive schemes that survived, in a parallel way, to the industrialization process, although they don¿t have been considered by the organization theory. The knowledge reserve in administration, from the traditional approach to critical studies, increased concerns on industrial organizations and business arrangements. Nevertheless, it is possible to find in Teoria da Delimitação dos Sistemas Sociais, from Guerreiro Ramos, elements to comprehend workmanship organizations as: technology, scale and sustainability, cognition, space and relationship and time. The research methodology used was bibliographic, field and documental, regarding action-research. It comes to the conclusion that, at present time, to keep it as distinct productive schemes, workmanship organizations must be associated to tourism and culture. The production must be thematic, with territorial identity, creative and sustainable, by the management of local raw material. ItemQualidade de serviços no setor público brasileiro: uma abordagem feminista(2006) Cherchiaro, Isabel Balloussier ItemSentidos do trabalho informacional corporativo: uma investigação sobre o impacto do conhecimento no trabalho contemporâneo(2006) Santos, Hélio Tadeu Martins dosThis study proposes and uses a multipolar qualitative methodology for the investigation of the meanings of corporate work under the impact of the technical-scientific knowledge. Based on the constructionist epistemology and on a heideggerian approach, this methodology made possible the description of such phenomenon under the Management perspective, but also under the Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy views. Study starts with empirical data, collected by interviews and in publications, and analyzes them based on conceptual contributions from the four referred poles. As a result, this investigation proposes reflexivity, impermanence and entanglement as meanings of the corporate work that culminate in the paradoxical work. It also demonstrates that the impact of knowledge occurs in a reflexive spiral of complexification, continuously affecting individuals and work processes; describes the impermanent character of the work ruled by time, by neophilia and by uncertainties that make precarious the very subjective experience of worker; and proposes that this work becomes entangled due to the way it is managed, and is an entangling work, for embarrassing the individual in its techniques, logics and dissonances. The paradoxical essence that emerges from this appreciation of corporate work is described on the following scopes: its reflexivity does not prevent its rationality to be fragile; its dynamism coexists with the difficulty to achieve substantive organizational changes; its entanglement compromises the possibilities of an apparently reachable well-being; its focus on present ends up to be emptied; and its purpose of individual sustenance becomes unsustainable due to hyperconsumption. But the conclusions of the study do no describe a definitive phenomenon. At the ending, it points out possibilities of living with the paradoxical work as well as possibilities of its transformation. ItemResponsabilidade social das empresas e valores humanos: um estudo sobre a atitude dos gestores brasileiros(2007) Almeida, Filipe Jorge Ribeiro deIn the last decades of the 21st century, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become one of the most widely debated issues in business management, concerning researchers, politicians, managers and society at large. With multilateral implications in economic and social life, CSR refers, essentially, to the discussion about the boundaries of business intervention in society and the ethical limits that should regulate that intervention. It questions the impact of business practices in social well-being, the role left for corporations and for the State in attending to community needs, and which are, at last, the responsibilities that tie enterprises to society. In this research, CSR is approached from the perspective of its ethical foundations, based on the moral reasoning of the business manager, as a key organizational leader with relevant decision power. Specifically, the research aims to understand how the personal human value system and the ethical orientation of managers influence their attitude towards CSR, considering this attitude as an indicator of managerial behavior that translates into corporate performance. Theoretically, CSR concept is discussed and presented as a set of social commitments, based on a strict interpretation of its meaning. As to human values, its philosophical roots are briefly analyzed and Schwartz modern motivational theory is addressed as main reference for studying the personal value system of managers in this research. Concerning ethics, based on classical theory from moral philosophy, references are seek in John Stuart Mill¿s utilitarianism, Immanuel Kant¿s deontological absolutism, John Rawls¿s theory of justice and the ethics of virtue inspired by Aristotle¿s moral thoughts. Based on an extended literature review, research hypothesis are proposed as part of a theoretical model of analysis named Individual Attitude Towards Social Responsibility Model. In order to test the theory¿s empirical validity, it was conducted a field study with 252 Brazilian managers, mainly from the metropolitan areas of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Results show that managerial attitude aligned with CSR principles is favored by conservative personal values, protectors of stability and centered on collective will, and by an ethical orientation based on egalitarianism as postulated by distributive justice principles. However, results also show that the influence of values and personal ethics on managerial attitude towards CSR only occur in managers younger than 30 years old. Findings and their meanings are discussed, as well as summarized in the Axiological and Ethical Determinants of Managers¿ Social Commitment Model. Finally, methodological limitations are evaluated and clues for further research are suggested. ItemApropriação de ambientes físicos de serviços por tribos urbanas: o caso Casa da Matriz(2008) Halpern, Eduardo EspíndolaThe research´s main goal was to understand how certain servicescapes are apropriated by groups of individuals who use them to build its cultural identidy, changing its original economic purpose. The literature review conducted to give theorical support to the investigation was based on services marketing and, more specificaly, on servicescapes. The field research was conducted in Casa da Matriz, a night club located in the neighborhood of Botafogo in the south side of the city of Rio de Janeiro. In depht interviews and participant observation were used to identify the approach used to design and to manage the servicescape of Casa da Matriz and the appropriation practices used by its customers in order to build theis cultural identidy.
