Resumo

This thesis aims to analyze how Brazilian Football is correlated with the political project of the military government that came to power in a coup in 1964. The development of that project is closely related to the search for regime legitimacy through economic growth and the spread of heavy patriotic propaganda. It is essential to understand the political landscape in question, since the implementation of the aforementioned project depended directly on the strategies chosen by the actors involved in the creation and consolidation of the Brazilian Championship. This offers fertile ground for questions about the relationship between sporting events and their uses by politicians, since it involves the understanding of the representative phenomenon. With the failure of the economic model put in place by then and the beginning of the project of detente, new mechanisms were needed to legitimize the regime, expanding the political participation of the population. In these two instances, in different ways, the National Championship can be used to analyze attempts to co-opt public opinion or even vote, however, not always was this attempt successful.
