Resumo

This dissertation investigates how the intellectual life of Delgado de Carvalho sheds a new light on the role of international relations in the shaping History teaching in Rio de Janeiro during the Vargas government (1930-1945). The aim is to highlight the state's role in promoting cultural exchanges between Brazil and other countries, through the actions of the Ministry of Education and Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Therefore, the hypothesis that guides the work is the idea that Brazil would have sought, through the intellectuals, the expansion of cultural exchanges with many countries in a key moment of reorganization of its nationalist project, highlighting the transactions with the US and France. To reach this conclusion, it articulates the assumptions already present at the historiography with documents recently available to the public to show how international intellectual circularity illustrates the context of Brazilian foreign policy and cultural activities. Finally, it aims to be considered by the debate on the emergence of culture in the International Relations.
