A wide experience in directing a school unit from Rio de Janeiro's municipality, made possible an approach about the social role and representations of student's mothers of the public school. Although the official speech is the general call of the population and especially of the student's mothers, for an active participation in the school process, the reality has shown us a lack of space for a concrete performance, as an example of the incapability of the school to handle with this population class underestimated by the professionals of education. This research confirms, from a dramaturgic perspective of the social roles, some complex and tenuous forms of the interaction in the 'school' setting and reveal us the social representation of the public school by the student’s mothers, this 'near-far' segment of the school community.
