Resumo
This study focuses on the member’s perception of the leader’s virtues and its potential effect on the quality of the leader-member exchange (LMX) relationship, as well as if the relationships predicted in extant literature between LMX and individual outcomes such as organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and engagement can be affected under adverse conditions and in situations of perceived member vulnerability. The quantitative study collected survey-based data in the context of family businesses in Brazil during the Covid-19 pandemic, in two timelagged waves responded by 341 members plus a subsequent third wave collecting leader-rated data about followers who responded the first two waves. The study’s results not only confirm the effect of the member’s perception of their leader’s virtues on LMX, but also reveal that such effect is mediated by identification-based trust (IBT). Furthermore, the results show that in contexts of perceived member vulnerability, the relationships between LMX and its individual outcomes are affected, especially by the order of return to work under extreme conditions. We present and discuss these results and their implications for future studies and for practice. Keywords: Virtues. Identification-based trust. LMX. Organizational citizenship behavior. Engagement.
