Resumo

This research investigates empirically what happened to the Organization and Methods (O&M) function and career in Brazilian organizations since 1985. The study seeks to empirically verify whether or not, as a few authors have argued, from its prosperous 1970s and 80s, O&M has suffered changes leading to its virtual extinction in today s organizations. Firstly, the evolution of O&M from 85 through 97 in a sample of 60 firms in São Paulo is investigated via questionaires. Secondly, the supply of O&M positions (compared to other areas) during the same period is measured through the evolution of job ads published in a local newspaper.
