This dissertation evaluates the impact of education on income of the young Brazilian workforce, following the tradition of equations of wages determination. It differs from the other existing studies in the area carried through in Brazil in four aspects. First, the analisis is focused in the young brasilian population that hás just entered the labor market and will stay on it for a long period of time, bringing important information on this market for the next 25 to 35 years. It also introduces the quality of education as explaining variable of income and adopts a protocol to input the education quality of the young workers for which information on education quality is not available. This input prevents selection bias. Finally, the dissertation differs from current studies in the subject because it explores different estimation methods of return to education and to the quality of education. Beyond the traditional OLS estimator method, this study considers the use of wages stochastic frontiers. The estimation was made from a two-stage cross-section model. In the first stage, it was estimated the equation that determines the probability of young students between 11 and 21 years of age to study in the public or the private schools. In the second stage, an index of education quality of young workers was imputed in the econometric model to determine young workers income between the ages of 16 and 25. The data input procedure was necessary simply because there is no statistics in Brazil on the quality of education acquired by the individuals. The analysis allowed us to show that the quality of education has a significant influence in young workforce income, with great impact on the income distribution inequality indexes in the youths. It also allowed us to show that there is a trade-off between the return to education and the return to education quality: some regions privilege the amount of education (measured in years) and others the quality of education.
