This study addresses the debate about religious education in public schools in Brazil. The study is divided into three chapters, the first two analyse the scenarios the United States and in France, which have distinct models of secularism. The third, in turn, brings the concepts of secularism, freedom of conscience, worship and belief, and aims to affirm its position before Brazilian Supreme Court cases (ADI 4439 and ADI 3268), as well as to analyze the law 3.459/00 of the State of Rio de January / RJ
