The One Belt, One Road initiative is an extremely strategic program developed by China in 2013 to expand its presence and influence around the globe. This study aims to analyze how much the initiative impacted the country, with a focus on the infrastructure sector. Based on International Relations theories, most studies focus on analyzing if China has a realist or liberalist approach regarding OBOR. However, this study focuses on the development of a derivative theory, complex interdependence, to assist if this new framework can better explain the country’s current position. Through the case studies of the relations between China and Pakistan/Greece, the findings indicate that this new theory can better explain the Chinese approach. However, it is also found that the historical past of each member of the initiative also has a great impact on the result of this study, which makes it not applicable to every case.
