Brazil s food production in the 1990-95 period averaged 9,38% of the GNP. A performance analysis has shown a stronger participation of the product grouping with a higher added value, being particularly noticeable that of the dairy products. In addition, a higher general consumption of food has been verified as a result of the increase in the real income of workers after the stabilization plan. It was also noted that the adjustments to the new patterns of competitiveness owing to the market opening resulted in a decrease of both, the net margins and volume of employment.
