Resumo
The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) was the first research institute established by the National Research Council (CNPq) in 1952. Its mission is to foster scientific research in mathematics at the highest level, to promote the training of new researchers and to enhance the dissemination and improvement of mathematical culture in the country. Since its inception, IMPA has been considered a centre of excellence. Given the relevance of the institution for the directions of national scientific research in the field of mathematics, this thesis aims to preserve part of its institutional memory over the course of its 70-year journey. It presents a digital catalogue as a complementary product to the exhibition "IMPA 70 years - past, present and future" conceived in the year 2022. In this thesis, we explore IMPA’s history through the concepts of memory, institutional memory, and identity, guiding the development of the catalog’s narrative. The aim is to preserve the institution’s memory and raise awareness among its community and society about the risks of memory loss and the vital role of national scientific institutions. The research is methodologically descriptive, utilizing a qualitative approach and participant observation. As a result, the catalog will feature images and events that highlight the institution's history and its researchers, complementing and expanding the timeline presented in the exhibition.
