This research lies in the field of operations management and sustainability, examining how corporate climate commitments (specifically net-zero pledges) influence companies’ operations and supply chains in a emerging economy context. It addresses the critical problem of a gap between public net-zero pledges and actual emissions-reduction actions amid growing concerns about greenwashing. The central research question asks how institutional pressures affect the adoption and implementation of voluntary decarbonization commitments in Brazilian companies. Conceptually, the work is grounded in institutional theory – considering coercive, normative, and mimetic pressures – and informed by the literature on green supply chain management, dynamic capabilities, and multi-stakeholder initiatives (MSIs). Methodologically, the thesis comprises three interrelated studies using qualitative methods. Paper 1 uses a qualitative case study to explore how external institutional forces shape firms’ net-zero pledges; Paper 2 is a single-case study investigating how one firm reduces its Scope 1 and 2 emissions through eco-innovation and the development of dynamic capabilities; Paper 3 employs comparative case studies to analyze how companies engage suppliers to decarbonize their Scope 3 emissions. The findings show that institutional pressures spur many net-zero commitments in Brazil, but these pledges often remain largely symbolic; only when companies build internal capabilities and collaborate with supply chain partners do pledges lead to substantive decarbonization. Firms that move beyond compliance achieve tangible emissions reductions and even gain competitive advantages. While external pressures (regulators, investors, peers) shape climate pledges, only deep organizational transformation and active value-chain engagement translate those commitments into real emissions cuts. By offering a perspective from an emerging economy original, this work extends sustainability and institutional theory to a new context and provides practical insights for policy and corporate strategy. It demonstrates how firms can operationalize climate pledges through internal innovation and proactive supply chain governance, ensuring that net-zero commitments are more than mere rhetoric.
