Resumo
This dissertation investigates the confusion between an opinion and a factual (conventional) news article, a problem that poses a risk to the reputation of news companies and can also contribute to the spread of misinformation. Using one correlated and three experimental studies, conducted in the United State and in Brazil, we provide evidence of the hostile media effect by showing that partisan individuals tend to perceive a congenial opinionated article as factual. Importantly, this research demonstrates that partisan consumers evaluate a congenial opinionated article as more accurate, which in turn affects how they perceive an opinion/factual news article. This dissertation contributes to literature on information processing, while attending to a recent call for further studies on the intersection of marketing and journalism.
