Resumo
This study is based on interviews, declarations and writings of Clarival do Prado Valladares, and on reviews by critics up to the date of his death. The primary purpose is to help researchers and students who wish to explore deeper the life and work of a Brazilian educator who was, at one and the same time, physician, critic, iconographer, photographer, art historian, poet and writer. Clarival Valladares created, with new methodological resources that he transplanted from Pathological Anatomy to the History of Art, the necessary conditions for the establishment of Brazilian iconology, the discipline that seeks to understand the significance of the symbolic values that pervade pictorial creation, and an indispensable tool for the proper evaluation of our cultural and artistic heritage. With these resources and with an original vision (in terms of Brazil), Clarival wrote the history of his country through the eyes of those that saw and recorded it – the artists. Not only the consecrated artists, but especially those most closely linked to the reality of their community and, therefore, to Brazilian nature. Following the itinerary of this educator's life, the author (his daughter and disciple) also attempts to convey the exemplary energy of someone who, besides being a thinker, philosopher and meticulous researcher, was a man of action.
