The 21st century began with a series of challenges to society. Despite the fact that there has been an evident global progress regarding policies against poverty, there is still much to be done. It is then that the concept of microcredit comes into view, which applies market mechanisms in order to attain social goals. There are countless experiences regarding this theme which demonstrate the progress and development of such a policy, both in and out of Brazil. At the same time, with the creation of Third Sector organizations, civil society tries to gain space and develop ways of organizing itself in order to adequately fulfill its social purpose. In this paper, we shall see how the concept of microcredit can act as an important catalyst for the advent of a 'New Third Sector' in Brazil, one that is self-sufficient and that can meet the social demands of the 21st century.
