This work is concerned with slowearning students in the field of cultural disadvantagement, according to specific literature and a sample of students from public schools in the Rio de Janeiro City. Specific literature has thrown light on basic points related to intellectual development, cultural disadvantagement, learning disabilities, child's relationship with the teacher, as well as studies of slow learning child. Following the literature on the subject interviews were arranged with student's mothers and teachers and objective tests were selected to measure student's mental leveI and readiness to learn how to read and write and numbers. The results of the analysis support the hypotheses raised in this work, according to which: a - environmental stimulation shortage causes damage to intellectual development and makes learning process more difficult; b - student's relationship with the teacher may either reinforce or reduce problems involved; c - children from low - income classes are the most likely to be culturaly disadvantaged. At the end of the work, some procedures ones to be adopted in relation to the sample group as well as to other similar ones are suggested.
