| dc.description.abstract | This study applies a modified Levinsohn and Petrin (2003) methodology to estimate production functions incorporating an endogenous productivity process. It explores the impact of trade liberalization in Colombia, aiming to determine whether tariff reductions enhanced the efficiency of domestic firms and whether the effects differed between exporters and non-exporters. Additionally, it investigates the learning-by-exporting hypothesis, which posits that exporting firms become more productive through their export activities. Contrary to expectations, the findings indicate that tariff cuts resulted in decreased efficiency for the majority of firms in two out of the three industries examined — Apparel and Non-Industrial Chemicals. However, the analysis supports the learning-by-exporting phenomenon for the Textiles and Apparel sectors. Notably, while a parametric approach to the endogenous total factor productivity (TFP) process revealed that exporters’ TFP was negatively impacted by liberalization more than non-exporters, this effect dissipated when controlling for endogenous exit. This dissertation also recognizes the problem of not observing physical output, and the possibility of the estimated impacts to be explained by changes in markups, instead of TFP. | eng |
