The New Institutional Economics, in particular the Transaction Costs approach, has been applied to Brazilian agribusiness systems analysis. Nevertheless, there are still few studies transactions between raw material suppliers and processors. This study tests the alignment of theoretical prediction and empirical finding on the matching of governance modes and transactions dimensions. The the natural rubber cluster in São Paulo State, Brazil, is our focus. The more than 5000 producers and 16 processors are an international productivity benchmark. Our approach features a qualitative research survey and statistical tests using ordered logistic regressions (ologit). In addition, we test the hypothesis that governance attributes and asset specificity are endogenously determined. The results, despite small sample limitations, suggest that the quantity of rubber transacted is positively correlated with highly coordinated governance modes, and that transaction frequency is associated with relational contracts. The endogeneity hypothesis is rejected. The reduced form of Transaction Cost Economics is a powerful analytical tool that tests the alignment hypothesis indirectly, thus, data regarding quasi-rents involved should help the theory to go further through more direct measurements.
