Several studies emerged in recent years, focused on the growth of banking correspondents as a branchless banking channel in Brazil, and stressing their role for the development of an inclusive financial system. There is, however, an important gap in this debate, related to the understanding of the different network management models through which the channel is structured. The aim of this study was to expand the knowledge about such models, and explain how each of them can influence the offering of financial services to the low-income population. To do so, the research: (i) developed a taxonomy of the different network management models practiced in Brazil, (ii) explained how these different models emerged in the historical process of implantation and growth of the channel, and (iii) identified potentialities and limits of each different model to deliver different groups of financial services to the low-income population. The analysis was based on a qualitative methodology and on a conceptual framework given by an 'expanded multilevel model' incorporating concepts from the social shaping of technology, the structurationist view of technology, and contextualism.
