Resumo
In examining the pedagogical aspect of teaching in distance education, this article dialogues with theorists such as Habermas, Vygotsky, Lévy and Peters to consider the possibilities of interaction among subjects through language. It begins with a review of the history of education mediated by language supports, culminating in today's information and communication technologies, which have made possible the use of the Internet in education. The versatility and interactivity characteristic of the Internet have led to innovations that underpin and impart signification to practices used in teaching, signaling major changes in education, which include the Open University, a vector in the democratization of education globally.
