This dissertation explores the intersection of international relations, cultural dimensions, and film industry complexities, investigating how geopolitical factors and cross-border collaborations influence the performance of foreign films in the U.S. The first study, “From Politics to Box Office: The Impact of International Political Events on the Success of Foreign Films,” examines how political relations between a film’s country of origin and the United States impact its U.S. box office revenue. Drawing on political consumerism and cultural goods frameworks, the study argues that films are sensitive to variations in international relations, with competitive geopolitical events negatively affecting their commercial success. Empirical findings show that while hostile political relations tend to lower box office performance, this effect is moderated by film ratings: higher-rated films exhibit resilience to geopolitical tensions, likely due to their broader appeal and perceived quality, attracting audiences despite political frictions. The second study, “Crossing Borders, Sharing Screens: How Co-Productions Boost Foreign Films in the U.S.,” investigates cultural and institutional distances as moderating factors in co-productions between U.S. and foreign studios. Grounded in the resource-based view and institutional theory, it suggests that co-productions can perform better at the U.S. box office than films produced solely by foreign studios. Empirically, our findings show that high cultural distance hinders co-productions, diminishing their success, as challenges in aligning creative visions and resonant storytelling for U.S. audiences intensify. Together, these studies contribute to international business and cultural industries literature, illustrating how strategic collaborations and geopolitical factors shape foreign films’ reception in the U.S. market.
