The present work aims to compare, using Data Envelopment Analysis input oriented model, the efficiency of commercial banks operating in developed economies (G10 countries) with the efficiency of commercial banks operating in the Brazilian market. First, banks are compared using a 'basic' model, which considers only the results of the operations of each bank and does not take into account the economic and regulatory characteristics of each market. Then, a 'complete' model is introduced, incorporating the environmental characteristics of the business environment in each country. The comparison between the two models shows that country-specific environmental conditions exercise a strong influence over the behavior of each country’s industry. Banks operating in Brazil, in general, were found more efficient than banks operating in more developed economies, when we consider the impact of environmental variables on the efficiency of the institutions.
