Resumo
The main objective ofthis research is to investigate how technology innovation helps to implement strategy and to obtain sustainable competitive advantage in a globalization context. After a comprehensive literature review, covering competitiveness, technology, strategy and strategic alliances, the technology innovation phenomenon was explored in four different industrial sectors: Paper and Pulp, Siderurgy, Pharmaceuticals and Medicai Applieations of Nuclear Energy. The concept of competitiveness and the Brazilian industrial structure are analised through the lemo of the schumpeterian, the industrial organization and the chamberlanian models. Evaluation ofthe companies core competencies and their strategic arquitectures are made as well. In addiction the relationship bctween competitive advantage and technological innovation is studied. A description ofthe existing schools of strategic thought are made. The relationships between strategic alliances and technology transfer are also described. The competitive and structural characteristics of the selected industrial sectors are analised. The profile of each company is also described, using data obtained through semistructured interviews. The results are individually analised and then consolidated in chapter fouT. The research results obtained information about the insertion of the technological variable into strategic anagement. It was seen that strategic management considers technology in three leveIs. The first leveI is analysis; the second is strategic decision and the third is strategic implementation. Finally, it is suggested that the industrial structure model proposed by Porter may bc refined to incorporate cooperative strategies used by companies through a so called cooperative strategy indicator.
