Climate change represents a major challenge for businesses and society. Companies face the increasing pressure to mitigate emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) and to adapt their strategy and operations to the increasing threat of extreme weather events. Adaptive responses depend on the managerial capabilities in terms of perceiving environmental change and learning from experiences, from others and from the context. With a multiple case study, we explore how cognitive and social factors influenced firms’ strategic responses upon the occurrence of an extreme weather event in the context of agribusiness. Our data reveal that besides experience of extreme weather event and the perception of climate risk, the empowerment of agents have influence in the decisions towards adaptation or to inaction towards climate change. Our study contributes to the investigation of the drivers and the barriers of adaptation to climatic events and of the importance of partnerships and technology in the development of adaptation capabilities
