Resumo
This article aims to discuss the increased offer of distance education undergraduate programmes and thecorrelation between the number of course vacancies, applications, enrolments and students who successfullycompleted the programmes. These figures evidence the regional distribution of such programmes. AlthoughDistance Education (DE) – or still Distance Learning (DL) – cannot be viewed as ‘the’ solution to thedeficiencies of the Brazilian educational system, it emerges as a critical point of reflection for all those willingto understand its qualitative and quantitative features. By identifying the need to assess the mediation roleplayed by DE as a social phenomenon, we have chosen to conduct a quantitative analysis with a descriptiveorientedstrategy to investigate the expansion of DE in Brazil in the target years of 2000, 2005 and 2011. Thisdiscussion lies on the premise of democratic education and access to Higher Education, since we live in acountry which is not able to ensure fair and equal opportunities for all. Strengthening DE in Brazil should aimto build philosophical principles that apply to society as a whole and which are able to foster knowledgeacquisition, autonomy and critical thinking.
