This thesis investigates the development of competitive products (goods and service). It specificaly discusses the quantification of product competitiveness and proposes the optimization of product design characteristics as a function of product competitiveness. A topological modeI to represent the development of competitive products is proposed .It contains the following phases: (1) competitive strategy for product development, (2) definition of the customer, (3) planning of competitive products, (4) quality and value deployment, (5) competitive assessment of the product , (6) adjustments in the product design. The integration of these phases on a quantitative basis, with emphasis on phases (3) and (4), constitute the main original contribution of this thesis. A methodology for the development of competitive products is introduced, as an example. It quantifies the product competitiveness in terms of the variables 'perceived quality' and 'perceived price'. These variables are then used to optimize the technical characteristics of the product by means of the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) methodology. Finally, these variables are also used to indicate the necessity of adjustments in the product design. In this way, the several phases of product development are integrated in terms of the same variables. The proposed model is applied to two published examples of product development and two new case studies, as a theoretical reference for the planning, design and competitive assessment of the products analyzed. In each category, one manufactured product and one service are studied.
