The increase of competition led organizations to the need of revisiting their processo The advent of globalization, aligned with the development of telecommunications, of information technology, and logistics processes, caused the market to be narrower each day. directing companies not only to innovation in products development, but also to the correct understanding of clients' needs as a competitive differential. For the professionals, these changes have meant new challenges regarding the presentation of results, as well as the maintenance of their jobs. In the middle of all these changes, it appears in the business and academic scenario, a new management process, known as knowledge management processo Furthermore, the effects of this new scenario led to the need of opening restricted markets, the telecommunication sector being one of them. The Brazilian operating companies of this sector were privatized in 1998. One of these companies was Empresa Brasileira de Telecomunicações (Embratel), which was founded in 1965 with the main objective of integrating Brazil through telecommunication. Having presented an engineering profile for thirty years, Embratel had to undergo deep changes in its internaI process and in its professionals' profile, so as to become a service providing company, establishing and re-evaluating procedures directed to the acquisition and development of new competence. This study presents an analysis of the changes in the knowledge management process in Embratel. after the privatization of the telecommunication sector in Brazil. The method applied was Content Analysis, based on field collected data. documents, and the available bibliography. The research considered the effects of the main processes in knowledge management throughout the existence of Embratel, divided in three periods: from 1965 to 1994, the period as a public company; from 1995 to 1997, the period in which the company went through the transition for the privatization; and since 1998, the era as a private company. The study allowed to conclude that, although the indicators of knowledge acquisition and development have changed along this time, Embratel has shown signals of being a company that presents knowledge management process, which certainly contributed to its history of success.
