Environmental Health Literacy (EHL) consists of disease prevention by raising individuals’ awareness of the risks posed by environmental factors to their health and by providing mechanisms to prevent, mitigate, or reduce such exposures. Indigenous peoples are part of a vast sociocultural mosaic of Brazil, and this population is particularly vulnerable, as they are exposed to major threats from large-scale enterprises as well as the impacts of extreme climate events. The present study is divided into two complementary chapters. The first chapter used the scale of Lichtveld et al. (2019). The second chapter developed a new instrument. The results indicate that EHL varies according to factors such as gender, age, education level, place of residence, and traditional actors such as Indigenous midwives. They also demonstrated that the instrument constructed based on the first study is robust and reliable for measuring the EHL of Indigenous peoples.
