Resumo
Today, environmental issues challenge the traditional competitive advantages assessment criteria, in face of the increasing scarcity of resources, of the consumer awareness, of the more stringent environmental laws and of the visibility of the big environmental impacts caused by a variety of supply chains. Thus, the traditional competitiveness criteria are reinforced with the introduction of environmental management to create benefits to a company. This work aimed to understand, therefore, why and how companies are adopting green purchasing strategies in the sustainability management within their supply chains. For so, the work carried out, in the first part, a desk research to find previous studies in supermarkets and to build an overview of studies on the theme among important national and international journals in the area of management, logistics and operations. In the second part, we developed an exploratory study of multiple cases in which two large supermarkets were surveyed and analyzed through unstructured personal interviews. The results of the cases results show that green purchasing strategies and practices are different between the companies. Besides, there still is a recent involvement with the business strategy. However, in both cases the practices carried out are still experimental and punctual, not representing, to date, a systematic and concrete movement towards the greening of the supply chains of supermarkets. The contribution of this dissertation is on the identification and analysis of the green purchasing strategies and the frame of reference of the development of the field through time, useful to drive future research in the field.
