This qualitative research aims to assess how non-financial Brazilian companies use derivatives contracts. Non-financial companies are defined as those which main activity is not financial intermediation. This research is based on a study, which has being conducting periodically by Wharton School, and incorporates some modifications in order to better fit the specific characteristics of the Brazilian financial market. Questionnaires have been sent to managers in charge of the financial department of non-financial companies doing business in Brazil, with the objective of identifying what motivates these executives to trade derivatives contracts for financial management purposes. In addition, the research investigates the expected results from the use of derivatives, the procedures of controlling and monitoring of trades involving derivatives and the mechanisms of price and results evaluation.
