Resumo
This essay elaborates on cost control in public services, pursuing to identify the reasons that gave rise to the demand for this alternative, which is a characteristic of the private sector, and its use by public administration. It then attempts to demonstrate the importance of cost control on public policy, from its conception to its evaluation, and emphasizes the downside of not adopting this type of control. It also demonstrates its indispensability in the study of effectiveness of public actions. There is a brief historical reference of cost control in Brazil, promoted by federal government. Lastly this essay highlights non-economic – but very useful – benefits to the present moment of Brazilian public administration
