Resumo
This paper aims to discuss the main aspects involved in public policies and actions to prevent violence and promote the culture of peace, emphasizing the role of the public health subject on this process. Violence is a very complex phenomenon, multi-causal, that affects the lives of people and produces huge impact on public health. Its overcoming requires the involvement of all sectors of society and public institutions, academic and civil society organizations are important actors. Public health has an important role, both in knowledge production and dissemination of such information, and in designing and implementing public policies of confrontation and violence prevention and building intersectoral networks that enable comprehensive care to all aspects of its determination.
