This article analyses the boundaryless career model, which entails the development of a transactional relationship between individual and organization. To begin with, the feasibility of the boundaryless concept in organizational contexts is questioned. Departing from that questioning, a qualitative research was conducted with 16 university professors who work for different Schools of Business in São Paulo. The results show that the academic career may be construed as a boundaryless career. However, the factors that promote this boundarylessness may be very distinct and, apparently, depend on the type of contract full or part time - established between the professional and the school. Therefore, even though the boundaryless career may actually be a fact in the academic career, this does not mean it is the kind of career the interviewees wished for and it does not mean that it may be enacted in other types of organizational contexts.
